Chronology

  • 1787 - First Post Office established at Tortola and earliest recorded postmark
  • 1842 onwards - Crowned Circle postmark used
  • 1858-1860 - Stamps of Great Britain used with A02 handstamp
  • 1860 - Post Office control changed from GHB PO to Colonial Government
  • 1866 - First Virgin Is adhesive stamp issued
  • 1890 to 1956 - Leeward Islands general issues used
  • 1899 - Issues with Virgin Islands name re-introduced
  • 1903 - Antigua's own designs issued again (Leewards general designs could still be used until 1956)
  • 1951 - Currency changed from Sterling to West Indian (Later Eastern Caribbean) dollar
  • 1962 - Currency changed to US dollar
  • 1968 - Name used on postage stamps changed permanently to British Virgin Islands
  • 1981 - Adhesive stamps inscribed "Antigua & Barbuda"
