Chronology

  • 1854 - The first Post Office was opened at Grand Turk
  • 1867 - The first adhesive stamps were issued in 1867, inscribed Turks Islands
  • 1873 - Island becomes dependency of Jamaica
  • 1900 - The name on the adhesive stamps was revised to the Turks and Caicos Islands.
  • 1959 - The islands were again designated as a separate colony
  • 1962 - The islands became a Crown Colony (later a British Overseas Territory)
  • 1969 - Currency changed from Sterling to the US dollar
